The countryside really is mud, muck and dead things…
Lucas Burton certainly doesn’t have a good impression of the countryside. It’s all mud, muck and dead things to him and coming from London, he’s not used to the rural and remote village he now finds himself in. But, as he reminds himself, he’s there on business. So,he heads out to a remote farmhouse to do a business deal but he finds the body of a young girl.
Worse still, someone has spotted his car at the scene of the crime and so how he’s top suspect. How will a city boy be able to convince the local police and the local community of his innocence. And what will happen when body number two shows up?
The Cotswolds with their rolling fields, remote farmhouses and rural country setting are the ideal place to spend time in. A good escape from the city when doing a business deal too, as it gives you the chance to get away from the city and its noise and crime.
However sometimes, the idyllic countryside is not all it’s cracked up to be.
Abandoned barns and outbuildings lined two sides of the yard, sinking into ruin beneath the leaden sky. On the third stride stood the farmhouse , windows and doors boarded up. The barricading was weathered to a place grey
So here, even the barricading of an old farmhouse had faded..
It’s not the desirable dwelling made from Cotswold stone that Lucas ha pictured. This is the ‘out-there world which is totally different tot he ‘in-here’ world where he has to keep up appearances and follow social rules.
