Munich.
The Munich Agreement was a settlement permitting Hitler’s demands for the annexation of portions of Czechoslovakia . The purpose of the conference was to discuss the future of this new area which was to be called Sudetenland. Today, it is widely regarded as a failed act of appeasement toward Germany.
Munich the novel is of course a fictionalised version of events but is set against the backdrop of real ones, taking place over a period of only four days in September 1938.
Paul Hartmann (German diplomat) and Hugh Legat (British secretary to the PM) are the two main characters in this novel who are both former Oxford scholars
The Munich talks of 1938 bring them together for the most important four days in their political careers if not their lives. they are there to avert war.
