There’s a gunman on the loose in Malmö and he’s going around targeting immigrants. He’s dubbed the Malmö marksman by the media and he wears a black hood and shoots those he doesn’t believe are true Swedes. Worrying for Inspector Anita Sundström as her new partner Hakim is of Iraqi descent.
When the boss of advertising agency is found dead in his shower, however, the Inspector’s attentions are divided. She is concerned with becoming involved with this as well as the marksman case but she is instead assigned to find a missing painting, given a new assistant who is still in training and effectively sidelined.
Life is complicated and Anita is determined to get to the bottom of just what is going on. But then another body turns up..

Malmö is not your usual setting for Swedish crime fiction since Stockholm and indeed Gothenburg seem to hold that record at the moment. However to overlook Malmö, a very unique Swedish city with its own set of problems is to ignore a part of Sweden and its many layers. The city in on high alert – it is well known for its high immigrant population and tempers have flared in the past so any risk of this tension escalating makes for a very uneasy atmosphere.
In Murder in Malmö, there is both an marksman seeking out those he feels doesn’t belong in Sweden, a stolen painting and ad advertising executive gassed in his shower. A city in which three very separate crimes become to be interlinked,creating a dark and foreboding sense of unease across the city.
This is a a novel which looks at the political and social landscape of Sweden and takes a look in to a few shady pasts. This landscape is not one of Swedish lakes and open fields but rather dark deep scars and a path back to the past that no one wants to take. Immigration is a real issue as it the rise of the far right in the country. Nothing here can bode well for Anita and her team.
The Art World
Contrast the immigrant background to the stolen art and at first it seems like a lesser investigation but these art robberies are seemingly linked to a series of murders Anita once again faces obstacles from her male colleagues but despite her not taking to her trainee at first, the two become quite a team. Anita also uses her skills and friendship with the artist’s daughter whose paintings are being stolen to find out more about the dark art world.
