Nuala knows nothing of her husband James’s past. He made her swear that she would never contact his family and never, EVER visit the place he was from.
But now James is dead, and Nuala is alone. Grieving and desperate, she decides to ignore his warning.
Nuala is about to find out that some secrets are better left buried – and that uncovering the truth about the man she married will have terrible consequences…
The story unfolds in London but the city is not evoked as such but does act as a city backdrop where the action unfolds infront of
Nuala goes on a search to a village outside of London.Here the atmosphere changes, and the claustrophobia ramps up. It’s a village near Taunton and firmly at the hear of the Quantocks:
“This place was different. Close was the word he had used, his mouth in a sneer as he spoke. Neighbours in each other’s business, in each other’s houses, lives.”
Thge village is uninviting, cold, dark and peeling paint announced the state of the houses.
