WW2: A detective in the Bavarian city of Rosenheim investigates a Gestapo stained murder
WW2: A detective in the Bavarian city of Rosenheim investigates a Gestapo stained murder
Inspector Peter Ritter is a detective in the Bavarian city of Rosenheim during the Second World War. He is anti-Nazi, distrusted by his bosses, and his every move is watched by the Gestapo. His marriage is falling apart, he is bored at his job, and his only refuge is in drunken conversations with his dead father-in-law.
However, when a man is found strangled by a bridge over the Inn River, and a high level Gestapo boss is seemingly involved, Ritter decides he must investigate the case until its conclusion, even if it might put him and his loved ones in danger and have international repercussions.
The independent city of Rosenheim is located in Upper Bavaria. It sits on the west bank of the Inn at the confluence of the rivers Inn and Mangfall. It is the administrative centre and very busy.
The number of Jews living in Rosenheim was high compared to other Bavarian cities. There was a request for the establishment of a separate Jewish religious association, but when this was refused, the Rosenheim Jews remained attached to their home and so had to bury their dead here too. However, a very sad occaision took place when the funeral of the First World War fallen son of a Jewish merchant based in Rosenheim at the city cemetery was refused.
From the beginning of bombing raids on German cities in the spring of 1942, Rosenheim was not spared. The focus of the air attacks was the railway station and the railway tracks, as Rosenheim was an important transportation hub between Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck. The station building was almost completely destroyed and railway tracks were destroyed over a length of 20 kilometers. The last air attacks took place in April 1945.

A solid and interesting police procedural at the heart of WW2. Unique in the sense that it’s not in Berlin or Munich for example but centered in a small town that has not really been on the map for this type of story.
It was fascinating to find out about the real life town of Rosenheim and the level of murder and political intrigue at the heart of this town. I looked up the town and researched a bit more to find out that it’s very closely linked to true events and you can tell the author has done his research. Michael Smith is an award-winning UK journalist and author. He served in British military intelligence before becoming a writer, and has written numerous books on spies and special operations. That level of authenticity shines through.
The level of underlying danger, the Gestapo and all that history has told us, made this book really intriguing. I will definately look for the second novel from this author as there’s a lot to learn from him and he’s a great guide to that part of history, putting a unique spin on the subject matter and themes within.
