Welcome to the Northern Spa of Scarborough
Marianne Noble, a lady’s companion, visits the fashionable northern spa of Scarborough with her employer but when she arrives, she is shocked to meet a man named Jerome and she is immediately attracted to him. She dreams of him but realises that as she is nearing 30 and has no dowry, she is unlikely to catch his attention. She does however become his friend and the two get along very well indeed.
Jerome starts to feel very attracted to Marianne but realises that his status and money make not make him an attractive find for various reasons. Marianne decides to take a chance on love but their problems are not over yet. Someone is very keen to find Jerome and to threaten him.
Scarborough as seen through the eyes of a lady’s companion who only gets to go to Scarborough as her mistress is staying there. This was the ideal location for many rich people to holiday at the time and ladies hoping to find a husband would stroll along the promenade. Jerome might be rich. walking in his hat and coat, but their stations in life, are as different as the level between the pier and the cliffs above. Where do they meet in the middle?
She enjoys exploring Scarborough from the pump rooms where the water is most enlightening to the seafront where she often goes to take some air. She dresses in a dark green pelisse, sturdy boots and a straw hat ready fo the harsh winds from the sea.
With shades of Rebecca, Jerome then takes her to his family home – daunting relatives and the shadow of her former and dead wife. Greystoke Manor which is fictional is just outside Scarborough and it’s in this large, imposing house where the Rebecca spirit is alive and well.
