Devastated, he leaves his comfortable life in Madrid and gets a job in East Berlin on a transplant team. There he meets Anïta, a woman whom the GDR has in its sights…..
Madrid and Berlin
The two locations in this novel are very interesting given what was going on there in the 1970s and before. Of course, the situation in Spain was very interesting both politically and historically. Franco was the dictator in charge of the country and he died in 1975 but his legacy took a long time for the country to change. Spain was still a dictatorship until 1978!
Berlin
Berlin was part of a Germany of two sides. In the 1970s the world was at the peak of the cold war, so the city and country was divided. West Berlin was a destination for people fleeing East Germany. The city was divided by the Berlin Wall and isolated by the Cold War, so a very tricky time for anyone to live there.
