Josef Erdman arrives in Maribor, Slovenia, on the eve of World War II. Though he claims to be a salesman, it soon becomes apparent that Josef has no purpose in the town–and that a newcomer can expect nothing but distrust from the townspeople. Against this backdrop he witnesses the fiery shimmer of the aurora borealis and imagines the town set aflame–an omen of the coming war.
Maribor
Life in a small town
‘Soon the parades in this town will whirl together in an insane, bloody, dance. Very soon all the factions marching today to different tunes and bands will be grabbing each other by the throat.Germans and Slovenes, Communists,National Socialists, clericalists, nationalists, Yugo-nationalists, Serbs, Bulgarians, Cossacks, workers and peasants, professional athletes and waiters, schoolmates and colleagues, brothers and sisters, daughters and mothers, fathers and sons will all have a stranglehold on each other and will grunt the words to their marches with lips bloodied, eyes pulled out, skulls crushed, bellies pierced. Through slit throats they will rasp out the young, brilliant, heroic songs of Sunday mornings 1938.’
