2000s: One grand summer can change and shape your entire life.
Sixteen-year-old Frieder’s plans for the summer are shattered when he fails two subjects. To be able to move up to the next year in the Autumn, he needs to resit his exams. So instead of going on holiday with his family, he now faces the daunting and boring prospect of staying at his grandparents’ house, studying with his strict and formal step-grandfather.
On the bright side, he’ll spend time with his grandmother Nana, his sister Alma and his best friend Johann. And he meets Beate, the girl in the beautiful green swimsuit…
The next few weeks will bring friendship, fear and first love – one grand summer that will change and shape his entire life.
Bavaria
The novel is vague on location only giving clues such as street names that are in several cities, or the name of a school that is similar to a few. Location is not key here anyway as the focus of the story is on the family, the desire to go to Rio on holiday and what to do in the meantime.
Ewald Arenz, born in Nürnberg (Bavaria) in 1965, studied English and American literature and history. He is a teacher at a secondary school in Nürnberg. His novels and plays have received many awards. Ewald lives near Fürth with his family.
A grand coming of age novel about growing up, finding your first love, sexuality and more.
A boy aged 16 fails his exams and so instead of going on holiday is sent to his grandmother’s house. There he meets a girl in a green swimsuit.
This is a novel about summer, about friendship and the lingering burning memories that we all have to some extent. I found it very emotional and poignant at times. All the feels of summers growing up and the memories of summers past.
