2000s: A week at a beautiful chateau in the south of France…….
A week at a beautiful chateau in the south of France – it should be a straightforward final job for Dora. She’s a smart, stunning and discreet escort and Daniel has paid for her services before. This time, all she has to do is convince the assembled guests that she is his girlfriend. Dora is used to playing roles and being whatever men want her to be. It’s all about putting on a front.
It will be a last, luxurious look at how the other half lives, before Dora turns her back on the escort world and all its dangers. She has found someone she loves and trusts. With him, she can escape the life she’s trapped in. But when Dora arrives at the chateau, it quickly becomes obvious that nothing is what it seems…
Dora finds herself face to face with a man she has never forgotten, the one man who really knows her. And as old secrets surface, it becomes terrifyingly apparent that one last secret could cost Dora her life…
The South of France with Adele Parks
The locations are vague and not really the main thing here but there is a keen sense of paradise, sun, beaches and a gorgeous chateau where a sex worker arrives to stay for a last job with a client. So exact locations might not be real but the sense of the South of France, a paradisethat you just know is going to go down hill fast, is evident.
There is a great sense of France and adventure such as a vineyard tour, a personal chef and celebrations at a French villa. What more can you ask for?
The novel is jam packed with a delicous cast of characters with this the opening line:
“No little girl grows up dreaming of becoming an escort. A sex worker. A whore.”
“No little girl grows up dreaming of becoming an escort. A sex worker. A whore.”
Now that has to be one of the most alluring opening lines I have read in a long time. A story about a high class call girl, Dora, who narrates most of the strange goings on. This is a compelling read. It all felt a bit Pretty Woman at the start with Dora accepting one last job to go join a client in the South of France. Pretend to be his girlfriend? One last job? Then she can leave the industry and go get married as was her plan?
Adele Parks is one smart writer. You think she writes domestic noir and for the large part she does, but her books are getting darker and darker and there’s a sense that she is publishing books now and rubbing her hands with more glee than ever before. This is a good book and a unique read.
Dora has a compelling story and you go back in time 11 years previously to find out what led Dora to what she does now. That I liked as it makes you realise that there are so many reasons why someone should end up in this ‘job’.
Adele builds up twists and turns aplenty and the Pretty Woman label soon disappeared as this is so much darker! A few times I had to suspend my disbelief but heck, life is often stranger than fiction, so who knows.
