No one felt sorry when Jacko Argyle died in prison. Everyone knew he had bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker from the fire.

But when a doctor turns up at the house two years later with proof of Jacko’s innocence, the whole family is horrified. Because it can mean only one thing – that their mother’s killer is still among them…

The world of Agatha Christie

The places in the novel are in fact fictional and although it’s set in England, the latest adaptation on BBC was filmed in Scotland.

Sunny Point

The house called Sunny Point in the TV series is actually the Ardgowan Estate on the Scottish coast near Glasgow. Set in its own grounds with plenty of wisteria and vines to get itself in knots, it’s the perfect location for a Christie novel.

The mansion belongs to Sir Ludovic Houston Shaw Stewart 12th Baronet. The Ardgowan estate is some 10,000 acres and has been in the family since 1406. The house itself has an interesting history for it was the setting for  battles, witch hunts and even a temporary hospital during WW2.

In the novel, Arthur Calgary says:

“How wild the scenery was here, he thought. One could fancy oneself on a Scottish loch, far from anywhere. And yet, only a few miles away, were the hotels, the shops, the cocktail bars and the crowds of Redquay.

“He reflected, not for the first time, on the extraordinary contrasts of the English landscape.”
