Elderly George Rainsford goes to investigate a suspicious noise one night and he comes across a bloodbath. A man has been killed and a woman brutally beaten, left for dead.
The victims are Lois Craven and Kevin Hardaker – both married, but not to each other. Their spouses swear they knew nothing of the affair and, besides, they both have alibis for the attack. With nothing else to link the victims, the investigation hits a dead end.
DCI Matilda Darke is under real pressure now – there’s a violent killer on the loose, and it looks like her team members are the new targets. With no leads and no suspects, it’s going to take all Matilda’s wits to catch him, before he strikes again.
Sheffield is known as and referred to as the Steel City due to its heritage and steel industry – Visit Kelham Island Museum for a history lesson and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet where the only intact crucible steel furnace survives today. Maybe get some to coat your stomach with when reading this novel!

So starts this twisty turny thriller as we head just outside of Sheffield, into the country lanes shrouded by woodland and forests, not easy to navigate and especially if you’re a stranger to the area. Even more difficult at night.
The setting is dark and cold – DCI Matilda Drake is a woman fraught with problems and a backstory to excite any phycologist. The MIT team are faced with problems and secrets which might start in those remote country lanes soon heads into Sheffield and the ‘city of steel.’
