2000s: A Mexican take on the dysfunctional detective mystery novel
Lupita’s hard-knock life has gotten the better of her time and time again. Things get even worse when she witnesses the murder of a local politician whom she greatly admires, the ghosts of her past resurface as she tries to cope with the present. She quickly falls back into her old self-destructive habits and becomes a target of Mexico’s corrupt political machine.
As the powers that be kick into high gear to ensure the truth remains hidden, Lupita finds solace in the purity of indigenous traditions. While she learns how to live simply, like her ancestors, she comes to understand herself and rediscovers light within a dark life.
And if there is hope for Lupita’s redemption, perhaps there is hope for Mexico.
Mexico is more than a country and setting in this novel – its a place full of chaos and uncertainty – it’s a country where economics and politics don’t seem to mix as the drug cartels are the ones with the greenback dollars clenched in their hands whilst the government does everything it can to stem the flow of death, violence and destruction.
Mexico appears to have two opposing personalities – one is the friendly face behind the evil mask of drugs – where the violence and threats of the drug world remain hidden in the guise of trade. These traders are not be messed with as they attempt to flood the land from the north with as many drugs as they can.
However, on the other side of the mask, is a reveal of the mysticism of ancient Mexico. Aztec deities and rituals compete with the more modern and frightening aspects of the Mexican role in this novel.
So, in the middle of this battlefield with two faces, a death of a politician could be the spark that ignites the fuse.
