Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park reveals a dark and deadly secret. The bodies of two youths are found with bullet holes in their heads. Procurator fiscal Maddy Shannon attends the scene, unaware that this grim morning is about to spiral out of control. The corpses have been carefully disfigured, perhaps signs of gangland revenge or, worse, ritual slayings.
The investigation continues, and the gruesome findings multiply, Maddy finds that the story of her immigrant ancestors emerges as a counterpoint to brutality and corruption. Just who is Maddy Shannon and why is she the way he is?
Dolan is from Glasgow and it shows. This is a man who has lived, breathed and dreamed the city like no one else. He knows its dark side, the stories in the shadows and the weaving threads of its citizens stories through its veins.
Glasgow spreads like a stain, weeping along the least line of resistance in every direction, between mountains, down valleys, draining into the sea.But there’s a secret geometry to it, a nervous system that makes death in the west felt and feared as keenly in Easterhouse or Giffnock”
The main setting here is the usuallly pleasant Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park and a gruesome stylised killing.
The entire city seems to be a suspect from those high up, those in the creative agencies and even the church
Oh and the Glasgow Vernacular. Realistic and even more evocative of time and place.
