Whilst the circus is entertaining and distracting the city, there are some crimes taking place marring the festivities – a bank clerk is murdered during a bank robbery and two young women commit suicides within hours of each other.
The evidence leads Rose from suspect to suspect but she still cannot prove conclusively who the real culprit is. She confides in her new-found friend – young, rich and beautiful Elma Rice – but when there is a murderous attack on Elma’s husband, Rose must discover what vital clue she has overlooked before she becomes the killer’s next victim.
“That sunny morning, as I stood at my kitchen door in Solomon’s Tour, surveying the peaceful little garden, the swallows had left their ancient nesting places and another sound obliterated the raucous cries of corbies, eerie black shapes forever haunting the lofty crown of Arthur’s Seat.”
Arthur’s Seat where the sound of bagpipes often mingles with that of honking geese as they fly over to their feeding grounds of St Margaret’s Loch. It’s got vast unpredictable slopes with many caves and hiding places. Thane, the strange deerhouse originates from somewhere in the depths of Edinburgh’s extinct volcano, And this is one mystery she has failed to solve!
The circus is in town and has set up Queen’s Park after having performed for the Queen at Balmoral Castle, Its presence in Edinburgh is an unexpected one.
