2000s: A case for Rebus that won’t die
Glamorous socialite Maria Turquand was brutally murdered in her hotel room forty years ago, and her killer has never been found. This is a case which still troubles John Rebus and one he just can’t forget.
Edinburgh’s dark heart is beating as loudly now as it ever was – Rebus’ long-time adversary, Big Ger Cafferty, is said to have settled down to a quiet retirement. But then you shouldn’t believe everything you hear. Especially when young pretender Darryl Christie is trying to stake his claim on the city’s underworld
This city’s dark heart is up for grabs and as Rebus gets involved with this cold case, the fire in the city’s depths is heating things up to the extreme..
The novel opens here as Rebus is tucking into a lovely juice steak. He’s drinking wine as is trying to ut down on beer. He’s spent the last seven days avoiding cigarettes and seems to be a bit more cranky than usual because of it. Talks about murder and a body being found at the very hotel he’s eating in as he cuts into steak…
Rebus tells more than a few stories here about this place such as the Railway station next door, dismantled in the sixties and the time Roy Rogers had steered his horse Trigger up the stairs for a photo.
Inverleith Place outside is a crime scene. A very nice one mind you – theres the Botanic Gardens to visit and there’s more dirt and creepy creatures here than in the whole of Rebus’ Edinburgh..well almost.
Well, at least the place he lives is nice. Merchiston, home of Napier University and on the way to Morningside which is home to many nice coffee shops, bars and open spaces
There’s a cafe here according to Chatham which sells the best bacon butties in the city! On the way to Leith so a nice wander on a Sunday morning with a bacon buttie is just what Rebus ordered.
When all is done, head home, slouch on the sofa and reflect on your day Rebus style.
