Old Babushka is a little old woman living in Russia. One day when she is preparing the eggs for the upcoming Easter festival, specially painted Ukrainian eggs which she paints with vibrant colours and swirls – each of them depicting a story or tradition of some kind.
One day she comes across an injured goose who she takes care of. In return for her kindness, the goose looks after Babushka and lays some eggs for her. Some very special eggs!
The painting of Ukrainian eggs is the inspiration in this story as it depicts the art and tradition of Easter festivals in Russia.
Using Russian phonetical spellings and using such vibrant and vivid colours for the designs on the eggs really brings this book to life. Babushka wears a brightly coloured shawl, the buildings in Moscow are bright, tall and very old. A delightful look at Russia and its landscapes.
Babushka’s eggs are vibrant and culturally interesting. Moscow has some fun and amazing festival depicted here and there are lots of cultural references to Russia in general such as the religion and the buildings with onion shaped domes. Russia at Easter.
