2000s: The marvellous tale of a donkey who ends up in a race
2000s: The marvellous tale of a donkey who ends up in a race
When barefoot running guru Christopher McDougall takes in a neglected donkey, his aim is to get Sherman back to reasonable health. But Sherman is ill-tempered, obstinate and uncooperative – and it’s clear his poor treatment has made him deeply fearful of humans. Chris knows that donkeys need a purpose – they are working, pack animals – and so when he learns of the sport of Burro Racing or running with donkeys, he sets out to give Sherman something worth living for.
Pack burro (donkey) racing is a sport indigenous to the State of Colorado. It’s largely due to the state’s mining heritage as in the early day, miners would take the donkeys through the mountains whilst prospecting for the mining industry in Colorado, miners would take burros, which is the Spanish word for donkeys, through the mountains of Colorado while working. They would load the animal with supplies and lead the donkey to the site and back again..
The Burro Races take place in various small towns in Colorado and are held to commemorate the men and their burros. It wasn’t until 2012 however, that Pack burro racing was recognized as the official summer heritage sport in the state.
There’s talk and mention of the Amish community in the state and of the fascinating Rarámuri or Tarahumara who are are a group of indigenous people from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. They are well known and celebrated for their long-distance running ability.
Well this is just wonderful on so many levels! Highly recommended!
