Brooke Sinclair’s dream of being a published author derailed when she was expelled from the University of Edinburgh seven years ago. Now a ghost writer, she sticks to other people’s stories. But when her college mentor Mhairi McCallister needs a co-writer for her memoir about Scotland’s most challenging trek, Brooke would do anything for the opportunity – including agreeing to hike the rugged Skye Trail for authenticity’s sake. What she doesn’t know is that the nature photographer who’ll join her is Jack Sutherland, the man who shattered Brooke’s writing career – and her heart.
Between getting sacked from the university and walking away from his family’s tour-guiding business to follow his photography dreams, Jack is desperate to prove he didn’t disappoint his family for nothing. Even if it means acting as guide and storyteller for the one who got away.
As Jack and Brooke head into the solitude of the sweeping Scottish landscape, they’re forced to confront old feelings. But can two weeks and eighty miles heal years of unspoken hurt and offer a second chance at love?
Edinburgh and Skye
Oh this book is a love affair with Scotland! There is so much to love about the little asides, place names, mentions and general love in the air with the landscape of the book a brilliant ad for any tourist site!
Edinburgh
Scott Monument and the coffee shops and blossom trees of the Meadows get lovely mentions. The coffee shop in the book could be fictional as it’s not named but its yellow. Couldn’t find a yellow one in real life but the blue one featured is lovely and recommended for a good reading spot. Good to see Edinburgh University nicely evoked with mentions of its heritage and the history of this part of town.
Skye
One of the most stunning parts of the world. The Skye Trail is the main location – and there are lots of lovely moments which really highlight the wonders of the trail and this part of the world. The lookout boothie looks particularly cosy. And the trail itself – well take this book with you to really pick out the feelings that the book highlights with skill!
A great example of book and landscape merging into one and celebrating each other at the same time!
