Ivy So has a chinese name – Sinyin in Cantonese and Shanyi in Mandarin. She’s proud that it means kindhearted and cheerful and is very excited to be going back to China as she was only three years old the first time her parents took her there. Now she lives in America and she’s older but plans to write everything down so that she can share it with her friends when she gets back home.
And she’s going to have a lot to tell them! For the moment she lands in Hong Kong, the journey is a whirwind of an adventure. Real photos illustrate all the points along the way so what are you waiting for?
Let’s go!
Shanyi has quite the adventure in China! Having landed at Hong Kong International Airport, staying with Uncle Wong, she is told to have a good sleep as there’s a busy time ahead!
And there is! This is a great adventure as Shanyi shows us around China and her family heritage. First they visit Panyu where her great grandmother lives. She visits the family’s 700-year-old ancestral hall, meets al the relatives she’s barely seen, and shows us a traditional Chinese way of life through a child’s eyes.
Then there’s the sightseeing! China is called The Kingdom of Bicycles but now is apparently the land of motorcycles so times are changing and Shanyi can’t wait to discover more.
The white tigers in the zoo! Dong dong the panda! Then if you’re hungry we get to see the food, the altar to the kitchen God and all the culture and tradition wrapped up in eating and drinking.
Visit China through the eyes of a child.
