2000s – Meet Emily Castles, Quirky, supersleuth extraordinaire
Emily Castles is not like your usual kind of sleuth. She is only 26 and is naturally inquisitive so she often stumbles across crimes rather than seeks them out. This second case sees her helping out at a local stage school run by Victoria, her neighbour. Victoria seems to be receiving letters about a blackmail threat and it’s not long before Emily is wondering just what Victoria is hiding.
Parents and pupils who may be attending next term turn up for the show ‘ Showstoppers’ and to see who will be receiving prizes from Dr Muriel and Romance novelist Morgana Blakely. But is a blackmailer in the crowds too?
Emily Castles, 26 lives in Brixton London and this is a story about community and local people.
London is neatly described as having “chewing-gum grey pavements” and where the street where she lives is a smart street with red brick Victorian terraces
She has developed some interesting survival strategies for living in London such as shouting out a cheery hello as soon as she enters her flat. From the first page, the mystery starts with a letter and the shock that Victoria has received a letter that could put her in danger.
Victoria is putting on a stage show and the mystery involves her work and the activity she does in getting the show ready for their performance.
The characters are as varied and flamboyant as the performances. Seema, Dizzy the aptly named handyman and a dog named Precious are the more than colourful characters. Dr Muriel helps out in solving the mystery as well as being a guest at the show and Emily also has an admirer in the form of a policeman who appeared in the first book ‘Three sisters’ but who Emily has no idea that he likes her!
Welcome to Showstoppers. The clue in in the name!
