Ben Jewell has hit breaking point.
His ten-year-old son, Jonah, has never spoken. So when Ben and Jonah are forced to move in with Ben’s elderly father, three generations of men – one who can’t talk; two who won’t – are thrown together.
As Ben battles single fatherhood, a string of well-meaning social workers and his own demons, he learns some difficult home truths.
Jonah, blissful in his ignorance, becomes the prism through which all the complicated strands of personal identity, family history and misunderstanding are finally untangled.
The world of autism
You might think you know about autism and even imagine what it must be like to live in it, with it, every day. You don’t.
This is no ‘Book about autism which barely scratches the surface of the condition. This is a warts and all view of it at its most severe. Jonah who has the condition is silent and his family struggling to get him in the best school for his needs but fighting a world that does not understand nor seem to care about one boy out of many children.
Jonah’s world is silent but it’s a world that is not completely silent to him for it bruises, seemingly attacks him, doesn’t seem to want him in it…it’s a world you will learn about, want to shut out with your hands in front of your face. And therein lies the true wonder and ability of this book to allow you to really see what the world of autism is all about.
