2000s: Spike Sanguinetti’s life in Gibraltar stops when he receives the shocking news that his Maltese uncle and aunt are dead
Spike Sanguinetti is horrified to have to go see his aunt and uncle in Makta. they’ve just been found dead. Reports say that a domestic struggle turned into something all the more horrific.
He is heading to the island for the funerals but even now he is to get no peace. His role as a lawyer means that he is to be the executor of the wills.
But he can’t shake the horrible realisation that his uncle would never have killed them both. He starts to investigate further and gets the help of his ex girlfriend, a translator to get even closer to the truth
In Malta, the oldest Christian nation in the world, self-interest can masquerade as charity.
Malta is a clever choice of backdrop for this novel. It’s a multi-layered country in many ways both in geographical and historical terms. The layout of the various sections of society from the squalid migrant camps to the bustling city to Marsa where the seamier side of life on the island resides. Oh and then there’s the ornate palazzos of the legendary Knights of St John.
As Sanguinetti crosses the island back and forth in the race for clues, the history of the island unfurls as well. For a good tour of the island from the Fort St Elmo to the walled city of the The Knights Hospitallers, this is one island with a great deal of exciting heritage and history. Mix in a murder mystery and you’ll never want to leave.
