Art student and former model Diana has always been admired for her beauty, but she wants to truly shine because of her talent and not what she looks like. Diana needs a muse.
Facially disfigured four-year-old Cal lives a life largely hidden from the world. People look at him but for very different reasons and he just wishes he could not be noticed. As Diana’s reputation develops and Cal grows up, their relationship implodes.
Both struggle to be accepted for what lies within.
Is it possible to find acceptance in a society where what’s on the outside counts for so much?
The real setting is not what’s on the surface but what’s inside. Same goes for the setting as it’s really not important here. This story could take place in any city, anywhere at any time.
What is does do is to evoke the lives and lifestyles of the characters – where they live and how they live are nicely done. Manchester in the 1980s had some dark sides and the pages evoking scenes of shadows, drink and drugs leads to a picture of a very murky and unsavoury place
The real setting here however is the internal world of the two characters. A gilded cage is still a cage. Wanting to belong and wanting a place to call home – that’s the real sense of place here
