22 year old Annie Schrijver works in the picturesque Albert Cuyp flower market where her father has a stall. Friendly and vivacious, she’s well liked so when she goes missing, everyone is shocked.
It’s not long before she’s found, barely alive, tied to a stone angel in a graveyard, surrounded by a ring of fire. Her body contains traces of a drug which connect the police to a previous case: the Sleeping Beauty murders.
Despite Annie’s torment, things get worse when a body is found nearby, freshly tattooed with three words: Sleep Baby Sleep.
There is evil in town despite the sunshine and tourists..
The author wrote this novel having found out about a hidden gem in the city of Amsterdam. Every one has heard of it yet many don’t seem to realise exactly where it is and what they really don’t know about is one particular corner of the graveyard where artists and other creative types have placed statues, guitars, pantings etc to commemorate the dead.
The story starts here but also focuses on the Red Light District where the Albert Cuyp street market is located in the working class neighbourhood known as De Pijp. (The Dutch version of Shoreditch)The Schrijver family in the novel are not too keen on the changes their area is undergoing. They struggle to make sense of their changing life.
Another main focus in the novel – this used to be marshland but now forms part of the Amsterdam docklands. This part of town is also becoming the financial hub of the city
Vos is still living in the centre of the city’s veins on the very canal which runs right through it. Fun trying to spot the very boat when on location!
