What you need to know before your trail

It’s not always a question of “whodunit?” Sometimes there’s more mystery in the why or how. And although we usually know the unhealthy fates of both victim and perpetrator, what of those clever few who plan and carry out the perfect crime? The ones who aren’t brought down even though they’re found out? And what about those who do the finding out who witness a murder or who identify the murderer but keep the information to themselves? These are some of the mysteries that we follow through those six stories as we are drawn into the thinking, the memories, the emotional machinations, the rationalizations, the dreams and desires behind murderous cause and effect.

Travel Guide

The world of P D James

There are a few vague locations in this series of stories, but the real setting is the inquisitive and insightful mind, devious too, of the author and her characters. Why do people do what they do, when they do it and why do they do those things? That’s the real setting here from the mansion house in The YoYo to the graveyards in The Girl Who Loved Graveyards.

Best one for gothic houses: The Yoyo

Best one for chilly backdrop – The Girl Who Loved Graveyards

The crime in nice places feel to The Victim and A Most Desirable Residence

Halloween and Christmas float in and out of the stories making this an ideal read for those chilly autumn evenings.

Booktrailer Review

Susan: @thebooktrailer

Sleep No More is a collection of six short stories by P. D James. The name of the author sold it to me, but the gorgeous cover sealed the deal. I think autumn, when the nights get chilly, is a perfect time to snuggle up on the sofa, in front of an open fire if possible, and read. Some gems here – in fact I liked all of them, but the Girl who loved Graveyards spooked me the most. The first story, The Yoyo, told in the first person was creepy too. Well, I suppose that was the premise of them from the word go, but the range of stories and level of spookiness was very nicely done. They were also ‘in the right order ‘if you read them from the start as they worked really well for me. Rattled through them so the only down side is that there are only six!
