Paul Rayment is looking forward to a comfortable old age when a calamitous cycling accident results in his leg being amputated. He is a broken man in both body and mind and seems to be falling in a depth of depression.
He hires a nurse, Marijana and they form a bond. However, his feelings for her, and for her handsome teenage son, are complicated by the sudden arrival on his doorstep of the celebrated Australian novelist Elizabeth Costello, who threatens to take over the direction of his life and the affairs of his heart.
This is the twilight version of the city of Adelaide. Yes, there are names of streets and places to recognise but the setting is not vital to the plot – what is is the sense of isolation, and what happens when an author lets his characters write the story.
It’s a surreal view of the city, a metaphysical and mystical feel to a city that is in this novel, the place where a man on the edge becomes isolated and discovers a world outside his bubble.
