2000s: Snap decisions can be dangerous
Jack and his two sisters are left in the car awaiting their mother’s return while she goes to find a phone.
The last thing she says to the older child Jack “ I won’t be long, you’re in charge”
But they waited
And waited
And waited.
The hot stretch of motorway is where this story starts:
Joy squinted up the road. It was long and straight and there was no sign of their mother or anybody else on the hard shoulder – only a shimmering lake , like a desert mirage.”
The rest of the novel is set in and around Tiverton, Devon:
Tiverton was at the bottom of a crater made of countryside, and it seemed to Marvel that there was not a single place from where you couldn’t see a hedge and at least a couple of sheep”
“Tiverton was not a metropolis but it was big enough to sustain a reasonable subclass of petty thieves and burglars”
“Taunton was a hick town, but at least it was a town, with gumstuck pavements and recognisable shops and the homely reek of diesel fumes”
In the dark, they couldn’t see whether Pevensey Bay was beautiful or not. Could’nt see the caravans or the little boats corralled by wire, or even the ocean – a;though they could hear the waves breaking onto the beach below, each one dashing pebbles on to the shingle, then sucking them out to sea again in hissing, clicking form.”
