What you need to know before your trail

A warm June evening, a local tradition: the students of Nantucket High have gathered for a bonfire on the beach. But what begins as a graduation night celebration ends in tragedy when Penny Alistair’s car crashes, leaving her dead and her twin brother in a coma. The other passengers, Penny’s boyfriend Jake and her friend Demeter, are physically unhurt – but the emotional damage is overwhelming.

As summer unfolds, details of that devastating night continue to surface. Questions linger about what happened before Penny took the wheel, and startling truths emerge about the survivors and their parents: revelations of secrets kept, promises broken . . . and hearts betrayed.

Travel Guide

Nantucket Island

Nantucket Island

Nantucket Island

The author lives with her husband and their three children on Nantucket, Massachusetts, where her novels are set.

The name “Nantucket” is adapted from similar Algonquian names for the island, and the name is thought to mean “faraway land or island”

The highest point on the island is Sankaty Head, which stands 111 feet (34 m) above sea level.

Nantucket Harbour

There is always a crush of people on the wharf – those disembarking, those picking up house guests, tourists wandering the shops, hungry couple in search of lunch. Nantucket is always busy! With Brant Lighthouse in the background, this really is the place to relax, take a stroll and read a book by Elin Hildenbrand.

Brant Lighthouse

Officially named Brant Point Light, the lighthouse is little more than 26 feet tall, making it the shortest lighthouse in all of New England!

First erected in 1746, the Brant Point Light is America’s second oldest lighthouse.

History of the island

There’s a lot of tradition on the island with the Jethro Coffin House  and the Lightship basket museum which is a place dedicated to baskets crafted by local men stationed on offshore lightships.

Main street

The shop for restaurants and shops. Take a bike like the rest of the islanders seem to use. Cars are allowed but they don’t really fit with the olde worlde charm and the seaside air.  Best to walk down this street and everywhere else to see and fully appreciate what is around you.
