Four generations of Persian women over a span of one hundred years. It depicts the effects of religion and politics-ever changing in Iranian society. Tapestries stands out as a true representation of the cycle of life.
The destinies of these characters are interwoven with many threads and the events and consequences throughout have a major impact on their lives. Throughout the generations, these women lived, loved, and fought for what they believed in. Though it was a struggle, they battled and endured when the odds were almost completely against them.
Tapestries of the Heart was written says the author to introduce both Iranian culture and tradition to the West. She felt that most novels set in Iran are set in the high echelons of society and within the Royal links in the country. This novel introduces four ordinary women and the everyday life in Iran.
Iran is a country with very strict rules and regulations regarding daily life, dress, culture and religious matters. Many people across the world feel that Iranian women especially are hard done by and that their fate is a dark one. Women here are supposed to have no freedoms and have to abide by a strict dress code, but Iran has changed – over the course of 100 years each woman in the authors family has had to abide to the changes, or leave the country of their birth.
This is a journey of Iran, its culture, its tradition and its heart and soul.

The cover of the book is stunning and perfectly evokes the culture and the mysticism of not only the content of the book but the stories within the stories. These women’s lives are intricate and delicate and it’s a tapestry of a journey much like that of magic carpet!
Nooshie Motaref has really captured so many threads within this novel and it’s an impressive feat. The story of Iran’s women as represented by the author’s family is a very interesting read.
