Lawyer Mags flies in to London from Las Vegas. This is no holiday however as she is determined to find out how her brother Abe has ended up in a coma. He’s supposed to have plunged from the fourth floor of a converted church. Was it really the accident someone is claiming or something altogether more sinister? Mags wants to be close to her brother, see his life and try to work out what he was like and what he was doing in the days and weeks leading up to his fall . So, she moves into his tiny apartment, tries to get to know the neighbours but is everyone and everything as they seem?

Most of the book takes place in this converted church where the victim and his girlfriend lived before his fall. Mags moves in here and starts to try and unravel the neighbours around her and the mystery of what happened that night.
The creaking stairs, the darkness of the hallway, the noise of the closing doors, echoing down the stairwell….this is a a novel of atmosphere and fear…you really don’t know your neighbours and their past. How does a man fall down so many stairs and no one hears a thing?
Stairwells are often dark, dank places to be. Here it’s a bottomless pit of despair – even outside these flats, feral youths roam the streets and the darkness hides and frightens those who venture outside.
