Destination: Paris Departure Time: 1919
The great war is over but the shadows still very much linger
Margot has come to Paris following the end of WW1 as her father, a German diplomat, is involved in the Peace Conference which is set to bring about peace to a devastated Europe and its people. But life here is not easy for a German girl but if she returns to Berlin, she will be faced with a life with a fiance she barely knows although she would be freer than she is now. This is a tough test for any girl and one which Margot tries to navigate as best she can but there are some unlikely alliances just around the corner.
Margot accompanies her father to Paris where he is a German delegate for the Peace Conference of 1919. This is a very significant time in world history as it was the moment that the world powers got together and tried to come to a new understanding and create essentially a new world following the devastation and evil of WW1
It was the moment when the UN was created from the wreckage of war and the financial reparations were placed on Germany which were blamed for their participation in WW2. The prejudice against the Jews was getting deeper and more disturbing too.
“The war changed people in so many ways and we all have to live with who are now.”
Margot is brought into this world and lives with this peace conference as the background of her life. Her friends, Krysia a Polish radical and Georg, an officer with the German delegation in Paris brings three very different worlds together when the world was changing beyond all recognition.
“There is no peace without war.”
This story is unique for it is Margot, a German who spent the war at Oxford with her father, now living in Paris, who narrates the tale. From the mouth of a girl whose country was considered the worst enemy of its time.
