What you need to know before your trail

Following the murder of her husband in what looks like a violent street robbery, Hannah Cole is struggling to keep her head above water. The Punchbowl and Pineapple, her confectionary shop on Piccadilly, is barely turning a profit. Henry Fielding, the famous author and new magistrate, is threatening to confiscate the money in her husband’s bank account, because he believes it might have been illicitly acquired. And even those who claim to be Hannah’s friends have darker intent.

Only William Devereux seems different. A friend of her late husband, Devereux helps Hannah unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his death. He also tells her about an Italian delicacy called iced cream, an innovation she is convinced will transform the fortunes of her shop – if only she can learn how to make it. But their friendship opens Hannah to speculation and gossip and draws Henry Fielding’s attention her way, locking her into a battle of wits more devastating than anything, even her husband’s murder.

Travel Guide

London

Oh this is such a delightful look at 1740s London. We start off in the most wonderful confectioners in Piccadilly called the Punchbowl and Pineapple. Then there’s the big posh houses down by the river, Kensington and Chelsea and the very nice St James Park.

Scenes take place all over London and we see the hustle and bustle of the streets and the trading areas and hear about the poor parts of the city – the brothels and the pubs/inns.

This is such a vivid visit to the city at that time and the sights and smells are out of this world. Especially in the confectionery shop!

Iced cream

There is new of a new Italian delicacy called ‘iced cream’. Hannah is desperate to make this in the store..

Henry Fielding

Henry Fielding, the famous author and new magistrate makes a very nice and lengthy cameo – he is investigating the murder of Hannah’s husband, Jonas. He is also threatening to confiscate the money in Jonas’s bank account, because he believes it might have been illicitly acquired…
