2000s: What would you do if you learned that the life you lived was a lie?
The location of Bath symbolises the wealth and comfort of Nina’s life. The family live comfortably despite Nina not working – it’s a wish her husband has expressed on more than one occasion – he looks after her and the house and she takes care of the kids. But having money is one thing, managing it and then loosing it is quite another. From the posh school the boys attend, the rugby games, the shopping trips in Bath, the family’s journey to the next stage in their life means that they leave all the comforts of Bath for a less luxurious life.
Whilst in the city, the Gothic city, there are many things to do which make you feel rich and pampered such as the spa.Nina however visits Milsom Street to see a solicitor..
They move back to where Nian’s family live and their life there is very far removed from what it used to be. They are no longer in control of their lives which makes the setting less attractive, leaves them feeling trapped and their surroundings not the luxury ones they once were. Southampton’s not at fault however – but it’s not the life they were living in Bath!
