In a remote sea loch on the west coast of Scotland, a fisherman vanishes without trace. His remains are never found.

There are several places and landmarks in the novel that are interesting to visit in real life:
Lake Torridon – where the novel opens. The lake is a panoramic 15 mile long, 2-part sea loch with islets edged by sandstone highlands and villages.
Erskine Bridge – Where there is an incident. The bridge spans the River Clyde which flows through Glasgow.
The rest of the novel takes place in and around the small Scottish villages and town typical of the Highlands. Fraserburgh is mentioned and this is a small town in the far northeast corner of Aberdeenshire, about 40 miles north of Aberdeen It is the biggest shellfish port in Scotland and one of the largest in Europe.
