One of the books I read as part of the Debut Crown award for the historical society. It took me back to medieval Scotland and right into the heart of the battles and clan fighting that scarred the landscape back then. Lots of characters and names to get on board with but if you draw a small chart then it helps to keep things clear.
I enjoyed the fact that this was based on genuine historical figures and events, s it helped me to understand and read further. It seemed unbelievable at parts but the fact it was true or at least inspired by true facts kept me reading. I love getting into the history of a country and this was a good read which evoked the violence and power struggles of the time
The folklore aspects which surround characters such as William Wallace seem to have become more powerful than the true story and both of these strands were neatly woven together. It was a bit heavy going in parts however and this ultimately slowed down my reading and didn’t allow it to flow as I would have liked.
It’s an interesting way to travel back in time though!
