Late one night a man walks into the luxurious home of disgraced banker Harry McNamara and his wife Julie. The man launches an unspeakably brutal attack on Harry as a horror-struck Julie watches, frozen by fear.
Just an hour later the attacker, JP Carney, has handed himself in to the police. He confesses to beating Harry to death, but JP claims that the assault was not premeditated and that he didn’t know the identity of his victim. With a man as notorious as Harry McNamara, the detectives cannot help wondering, was this really a random act of violence or is it linked to one of Harry’s many sins: corruption, greed, betrayal?
The family home where the attack takes place is located in the rather nice area of Dalkey. The house is worth some €5.4 million and is semi-detached. The house of a corrupt banker and his wife, both at the centre of this murder mystery. Who attacked and killed him and why?
The area near to the house sounds lovely – with stunning hillside views, a gold course and Dalkey village with its bars and cafes.
There are also a few places of note in Dublin itself such as Trinity College where Caitlyn attended and of course the glistening Dublin Bay where it’s the reflections that really reveal the truth..
Julie has plans to be a teacher and having read Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy, she takes up a place here

I first discovered Jo Spain’s heartbreaking read “With Our Blessing” about the child orphanages in Ireland and that really stayed in my mind so I was keen to read her first foray into the world of psychological thrillers. It’s set in Ireland although place and setting aren’t the draw – it’s the insides of people’s homes and heads which really drags you in.
Well, blow me down, if she hasn’t gone and totally made that genre her new home. It’s like a high speed, fast energy Columbo case where you know the killer early on before the whole thing unravels before your eyes to reveal the why dunnit and the truth. Smoke and Mirrors comes to mind.
The writing here is what stood out for me – sharp, deadly and takes no punches. It’s self assured and confidant and the characters, although not likeable are in fact hideously fascinating
Reading it is like unravelling a really tightly pulled plait – slowly, with a few tangles to work out and a few shouts as you are pulled one way and then another and yet you’re still trapped in the plot. The final denouement is the raggedy aftermath of secrets and lies
