Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise – My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell
Just before WW2, the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for all kinds of animals. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.
Durrell’s memories of those enchanted days gave rise to these three classic tales.
The ultimate adventure really – as a young boy of about 8, Gerald moved to Corfu from England and spent his time looking and studying the animals there. He had pets and new friends and he got to love animals so much that he ended up becoming a famous naturalist and conservationist.
This is the island of Corfu and the scenery and animals there seen through this eyes and what a view!
The Durrells of Corfu actually started off with their upbringing in India and the crisis that brought them to England and then Greece.
Once on Corfu they met a wild and interesting cast of characters- Theodore the biologist, the taxi driver Spiro Halikiopoulos and the prisoner Kosti – as well as the visit of American writer Henry Miller.
The Durrells of Corfu – there are many places to experience the family’s adventures on the island. And the fun is in finding even more from the television adaptation!
