2022: Bodies found under the patio. New owners questioned…
When pregnant Saffron Cutler moves into 9 Skelton Place with boyfriend Tom and sets about renovations, the last thing she expects is builders uncovering a body. Two bodies, in fact.
Forensics indicate the bodies have been buried at least thirty years, which leads the police to question the cottage’s former owner – Saffy’s grandmother, Rose.
Rose’s Alzheimer’s means her memory is increasingly confused. She can’t help the police – but it is clear she remembers something.
As Rose’s fragmented memories resurface, and the police dig ever deeper, Saffy fears she and the cottage are being watched . . .
Cotswolds and Bristol
The village of Beggars Nook is, as you would expect, fictional. Can’t have a house with two bodies actually being on the map. Skelton Place of course is also fictional but this is a clever play on words – Skelton – Skeleton – and there are at least two under the patio.
There are short trips to Bristol to see a relative but the main story takes place in a fictional idyllic village and that’s what makes it even more disturbing. The place you would least expect to find this kind of thing…
What a fun and twisty read. My head is spinning as a result but this was so worth it!
Two bodies found in your new house’s back garden. What would you do? Your grandmother used to own this place and live here. Now she’s in a home. What does she know?
Brilliant use of dual time line and switch of character POV. Short chapters and use of first person brings the much needed immediacy to the plot which really makes it pop.
This novel is a top thriller for all the armchair detectives out there. Very twisty and the ending is just fantastic.
