2000s: Galloway, the head of forensic archaeology at the fictional University of North Norfolk, digs deep into Norfolk’s past to solve the crimes of the present.
When she’s not digging up bones or other ancient objects, archaeologist Ruth Galloway lives alone in the remote area of Saltmarsh near Norfolk.
When a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach nearby, Ruth is the one who is sent to investigate. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson thinks he has found the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing ten years ago. Since her disappearance he has been receiving bizarre letters about her, letters with references to ritual and sacrifice.
Ruth finds herself in a completely new situation and is not entirely comfortable with how things are going. Soon fear will turn to danger.
Now then, if you’ve not been to Norfolk before, you’ll enjoy your visit with this book. The Saltmarshes might be fictional but they seem real and you will still be able to taste the salt air in your mouth as you read. It;s gritty and real. Griffiths has complete captured the essence of the area in and around the Norfolk coast – it;s certainly not known for its beachy read capabilities here but rather its bleakness.
Ruth Galloway’s Norfolk is as diverse as she is – her character is varied and a little awkward. She even lives in a small cottage on the isolated and bleak coastline and you can just see her getting blown away as she leaves her cottage for work. Knowing that a child has now gone missing close to where you live sends the shivers up her and the reader.
Pretend you’re out there with Ruth staring out into the bleak Norfolk wind, the salt air biting at your face, the salt dunes protecting you from the salt spray and the sea.
Because the crimes past and present mixed with the wild raw setting make for quite the literary travel experience.
