Cannes in 1800s is being constructed and modelled and of course does not represent the city it is today. For instance:
I was walking through a newly constructed neighbourhood, not far from the Boulevard de la Fonciere, which, until, recently had been deeply entrenched in the country side, Real estate speculation had provoked an economic crisis in the region and bankruptcy was now rife among the local population, particularly in Cannes.
Who could have guessed that was wash nothing more than a fishing village just a few decades earlier would become a city brimming with unscrupulous profit seekers.
But then there are traces of what Lola calls “the old life”
“The divine scent of the olive trees, tiny orange groves, and oleanders filled the air despite the coal fumes from the nearby train station.
The novel evokes the town and its surroundings nicely – oh to be on the Croisette!
