2000s: Murdered in their sleep, what chance do they have?
Newly fledged DC Kirsty Wilson is called to the scene of an elderly woman who has been found dead in her home. Suspicious as this does not seem to be natural causes and the woman did have a mysterious visitor in the early hours of that morning.
A horrible case of someone murdering a most vulnerable woman whilst pretending to be a carer. And then another body turns up and Kirsty really is thrown in at the deep end.
There is something very personal and very perplexing about these two cases, seemingly unconnected. But then a third body turns up, and the case takes on a whole new, and much more sinister meaning.
Ah the Glasgow grit is alive and well. For as Kirsty stales s on a trip down memory lane as she compares it to the city when when was in uniform:
The old tenement building were just the same , beyond the swishing windscreen wipers, many windows boarded up as the developers sought to tear down and renew this area. Regeneration has taken place because of the Commonwealth Games Glasgow’s proud moment on the world stage
The Scottish nostalgia and wit are carefully carved into this gritty novel – From the sign of The Big Yin on a pub sign to the Scottish vernacular “ You canne park here”, it’s not just the fog and the drizzling rain which creates the mood
As Kirsty returns to the city and sees it through new eyes so too does the reader. Alex Gray has captured a city of two sides or than and now in one.
