The loss of a lifeboat along with all three of its crews is a hard blow for the small town of Knockhaven. But it’s harder still when police discover that the wreck may not have been a simple accident. Was it the act of bored vandals in a fishing port stricken with unemployment? Was there a link to the drug trade which has taken root in the locality? Or is there someone who, in their determination to kill one person, was callous enough to take two innocent lives?

It engulfed the small boat becalmed in the Bay of Luce,then on its south-west shore, the ancient stone harbour of the port of Knockhaven”
Anstuther (Fife)
Anstruhter in Fife is where Aline herself grew up and she has said that this helped shape and influence the book and its setting. It’s certainly a nice fishing town and you can see the resemblance! The subject of fishing and overfishing due to EU laws, no to mention the fate of fisherman and how hard they worked, what the conditions at sea were like.
Wigtown (Dumfries and Galloway)
Wigtown in Galloway is the Scottish Book Town. This became the inspiration for the novel as it ‘s farming country and the author remembers visiting her at the same time that the epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease were destroying the community. Sheep and cattle were having to be slaughtered. Funeral pyres gave the countryside a smell of death and destruction. So, next time the Wigtown festival is on, you can go and visit Knockhaven at the same time!
