Travel Guide

A old fashioned tour of the Big Apple

Poppy is in the middle of an investigation in the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, but it’s not an easy task!

The Garment Area

Her investigations take her from the luxurious mansions of the mega-rich to the notorious Speakeasies and the Garment area. The contrast of the areas is interesting and paints a vivid picture of the 1920s. It was here in the Garment area where there were many illegal immigrants working or rather being exploited in the name of fashion.

Ellis Island

This was a major place synonymous with the wave of immigration at that time. It was there where the immigrants were “dealt with”

Prohibition and the Speakeasy’s

A speakeasy was an illicit establishment that sold alcoholic beverages during the time of the Prohibition era as illustrated in the book. There were many at the time (1920–1933, longer in some states) and Chester’s in the novel is a good example of the atmosphere, illegal activity and for it being a microcosm of the time. They were also called “blind pigs” or “blind tigers”
