DS Fiona Griffiths is bored. It’s been months since she had a good case to get her teeth into – well she might be getting to regret thinking that when she gets given not just a murder but of a decapitation, and one committed with an antique sword. The murder case is one puzzle after another.
The victim, Gaynor Charteris was an archaeologist in the process of excavating a nearby iron-age site. So who on earth would want to kill her?
Fiona starts to investigate and finds evidence of a crime that seems to have its origins in King Arthur’s greatest battle – a crime so bizarre that getting her superiors to take it seriously is going to be her toughest job. Especially since the crime hasn’t yet been committed.
The village of Dinas Powys is located not far from Cardiff where the main setting of the police investigation is centered. The first crime scene is at Cwm George Fort which is described as being only a short distance from the village. This is only one of a few Welsh villages where items of value in churches, archaeological digs and old buildings are being stolen. All of the items turn out to be related to the Dark Ages and Arthur in some way. And this is the crux of this novel – the doubts and mysteries surrounding the existence of legendary King Arthur .
King Arthur is a legendary British leader who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and early 6th centuries AD. There’s an awful lot of myth and folklore surrounding the King. The stories have lasted for hundreds of years and he’s still very much a part of popular myth and historical, academic debate . Arthur is often portrayed as a real hero of the 5th century and the so called Arthurian legend has been made into many TV series Merlin and Camelot and more recently the film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
