1982 – Michele Balistreri, headstrong and arrogant, is the man who takes on the case, but the investigation is hard and Balistreri young and inexperienced and so this becomes a tragedy which will stay with him for ever.
2006 – While Italy celebrates its first World Cup triumph in twenty-four years, journalist Linda Nardi is busy investigating a series of crimes and attacks on young women. Balistreri is now a high ranking police officer with bad memories of 24 years ago and so is more determined than most to solve this case.
As Linda fights to fix the present, to solve the case and reveal the truth about the racist and corrupt Italian society, Balistreri fights to assuage his guilt of the past.
A journey starts which neither of them are prepared for and the trail of evil has tentacles stretching way back and to levels neither of them expected.

The story starts in 1982 and spans almost 25 years – a glorious period in Italy’s history as 1982 and 2006 are the goalposts in between which football glory was showered across the country. During this time however, there was something dark and sinister lying at the back of the net, hidden in plain sight. In 2006, the mother of the 1982 murder victim commits suicide.
