There’s dark things and demons in this version of Ghent:
“OK…well, I don’t know the whole story. It’s kind of old – you know, the stuff your grandma tells you. Years and years ago, I mean hundreds of years ago, there was this rich guy who lived in Ghent and he’s supposed to have summoned these demons up to protect him and his family, so nobody could kill them. Anyway, I guess they were easier to call up than to get rid of, because supposedly they’re still here, up on the rooftops, watching the city every night.”
The city, like Bruges, is IDEAL for the setting for this gothic tale. It’s like a vampire movie set with its cobbled streets, narrow alleys, dark corrners, ornate steel bridges and iron gates and gargoyles… The history of the buildings and the city itself is varied and interesting. Ghent is also home to old guildhouses and gothic-style churches. There’s even a gothic castle – Gravensteen castle and the three (gothic) towers below: the Belfort, Sint-Baafs and Sint-Niklaas.
