The title comes from the protagonist who is of Hawaiian royalty descent (back when Hawaii was a kingdom) – Now, with his wife in a coma, he wants to make his own way in the world, for himself and for his daughters.
He wants to leave a legacy – to be something and somebody so he can say that he moved up the family ladder and not down it.
A tale of a dysfunctional family and a tragedy that ultimately brings them closer.
Hawaii – a place for sitting on the beach and contemplating about life. And that’s just what Matt King does as his wife slips further into a coma. As he sits on the beach as we all do on holiday and think about our lives, he thinks about who and what he is and what life he has compared to the one he wanted and thought he would get.
The slow and dream like state of much of the novel is reflected in the setting and vice versa for it is lazily beautiful and slowly paced, relaxed but poignant. Sometimes paradise hides things..
