The Dinner Guest is a novel, with the feel of documentary non-fiction. It connects two life-changing events – the very public death of Ybarra’s grandfather, and the more private pain as her mother dies from cancer and Gabriela cares for her.
The family history of the city:
“My grandfather Javier was mayor of Bilbao from 1963 -1969, as well as president of the Provincial Council of Vizcaya from 1947 to 1950, of the newspaper El Correo Espanol- El Pueblo Vasco – and of the Bilbao juvenile court.”
Past and present:
“The estuary of Bilbao, once a global symbol of progress, was now a muddy wasteland full of crumbling blast furnaces.”
“In 1983, the year I was born, a flood finally swamped Vizcaya’s ailing industry.”
