Manawaka is a fictional town in the Canadian province of Manitoba, frequently used as a setting in novels and short stories by Margaret Laurence. The town was based on Laurence’s real-life hometown of Neepawa. There is a town called Maniwaki, which is similar in spelling but this is all the way over in Quebec.
The book has many locations but it’s the Canadian one which shines. This is a Canadian woman searching for her identity and in the meantime, finding the identity of French Canada and the English one, the differences between urban and rural Canada and the cultural differences of the Canadian people whether they be immigrants or Native peoples.
